What happens if you miss an RD instalment?

Understand common consequences of a missed recurring deposit instalment and the questions to ask your bank before opening an RD.

Missing a recurring deposit instalment does not have one universal consequence. A bank may charge a late fee, allow the instalment to be paid later, change the maturity amount or eventually treat the account as irregular. The exact outcome comes from the product terms.

That is why an online RD Calculator normally assumes every monthly instalment is paid on time. It cannot predict a bank-specific fee or a delayed payment that has not been entered.

Check the due-date rule first

Some products link the monthly due date to the date on which the RD was opened. Others define a monthly window. Confirm:

  • the due date or permitted payment window;
  • whether an auto-debit retry is attempted;
  • the fee for a delayed instalment;
  • how long an unpaid instalment can remain outstanding; and
  • whether repeated defaults can discontinue or close the account.

Take a screenshot or save the product schedule when opening the deposit. Terms and web pages may later be updated.

A missed debit and a missed instalment are not always identical

An auto-debit can fail because the linked account has insufficient funds, a mandate has expired or a technical problem occurs. The RD may still allow a manual payment within the applicable window.

Check the RD account rather than assuming the debit will be retried. If the bank offers alerts, enable them. Keeping a small buffer in the linked account can also reduce accidental misses.

Post Office RD rules are a useful example

The National Savings Recurring Deposit Scheme has its own statutory framework. Under the 2019 scheme text, up to four defaults may be handled by extending the maturity period by the number of defaulted months and paying those instalments during the extension. More than four defaults can cause the account to be treated as discontinued, with revival allowed only within the specified period and subject to a revival fee.

Those are Post Office rules, not a template for every bank RD. Read the current National Savings Recurring Deposit Scheme document and confirm any subsequent amendments with India Post.

How a missed instalment affects the estimate

If an instalment is paid late, it may earn interest for less time. A fee may also reduce the net benefit. If it is never paid, both the contribution and its potential interest disappear from the maturity amount.

To model a permanently skipped instalment, you can run the RD Calculator with the original plan, then compare it with a separate estimate that reflects the lower total contribution. Treat the difference only as an illustration because the bank’s actual handling can be different.

What to do after a missed payment

  1. Check whether the payment is genuinely overdue.
  2. Review the product terms in the account opening document.
  3. Keep enough money available for the instalment and any disclosed fee.
  4. Contact the bank or post office through an official channel.
  5. Retain the payment receipt and updated account statement.

Do not send money to a caller or link claiming to “regularise” the account. Open the bank’s official app or type its website address directly.

Preventing the next miss

Schedule the RD debit soon after income normally reaches the linked account. Add a calendar reminder one or two days earlier. If the instalment repeatedly strains the budget, the problem may be the plan rather than the reminder.

A smaller RD that remains regular is usually more useful than an ambitious commitment that repeatedly incurs fees. Before opening a new deposit, use the RD Calculator to stress-test a lower monthly amount and preserve room for irregular expenses.
